WINTER SAFETY TIPS · Remember to dress in layers and wear boots with nonskid soles. Wear a bright scarf or hat or reflective gear so drivers can better see you. Do not wear a hat or scarf that blocks your field of vision. · Before you step off the curb, make sure oncoming cars and trucks have come to a complete stop. · Before you move your vehicle scrape the ice and snow from every window and exterior mirror of the car. Do not forget to remove the ice and snow from your headlights, brake lights, and even the roof and hood of your vehicle. · When driving in inclement weather leave extra distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. · Beware of Black Ice. · Keep both hands on the wheel and concentrate on driving. While having the radio on can provide helpful weather and road condition information it can also be distracting. Refrain from using your cell phone while driving in inclement weather. · Drive slowly and remember posted speed limits identify the maximum speed allowed in ideal weather conditions. Law enforcement agencies can write citations to motorists driving the speed limit if weather conditions warrant a slower speed. · Keep your vehicle stocked with simple emergency equipment such as a blanket or extra clothes, snacks and beverages (never alcohol), a small shovel, flashlight, bag of sand or cat litter for traction, long jumper cables, and a windshield scraping device to name a few. · If you do have trouble, run the engine only briefly, as carbon monoxide can accumulate more easily in a non-moving vehicle.
